Mantel clocks are relatively small house clocks traditionally placed on the shelf, or mantel, above the fireplace. The form, first developed in France in the 1750s, can be distinguished from earlier chamber clocks of similar size due to a lack of carrying handles.
These clocks are often highly ornate, decorative works. They are most frequently constructed from any combination of ormolu, porcelain, and wood. One of the most common and valued types of mantel clocks are the French Empire-style timepieces.(from wikipedia)

T&N -Telefonbau und Normalzeit – Master Clock – 6 x 13 x 35 in. (15 x 33 x 90 cm)

This example of a T&N (Telefonbau und Normalzeit) electric master clock could have been manufactured in the 1960s or 70s. It has a blue enamelled steel case with a fully glazed door. The clock will drive a number of alternating polarity, one minute slave dials.

The escapement is a good quality dead-beat, and the 3/4 second pendulum rod is of wood with a spun brass bob. There is a seconds subsidiary dial.

Woodblock printing in Japan (Japanese: 木版画, moku hanga) is a technique best known for its use in the ukiyo-e artistic genre; however, it was also used very widely for printing books in the same period. Woodblock printing had been used in China for centuries to print books, long before the advent of movable type, but was only widely adopted in Japansurprisingly late, during the Edo period (1603-1867). The technique is essentially the same as that which is called woodcut in Western printmaking.
